Instructions on updating statistics in HeatStat Admin

(Written by Bengt Svensson, 2006-05-17)

Basics:

First step is to aquire a login name and a password from your League Administrator. Send a mail to Thommy Brolin (thommy.brolin@docu.ch) if you do not know where to get your login data. Make sure all players in both teams are entered into the system. Normally the complete roster is entered for each team prior to the season. If additional players join the team during the season, those can be added using the 'Manage Players' module.

Login:

Go to the web page http://www.heatstat.se/heatstat/admin and login using your username and password. The page 'HeatStat Admin Panel' will open, and display your name as logged in. Here you find a field where you are asked to enter the id of the game you want to enter. The game id can be found in Schedule in the public HeatStat web page, or at your national federations web page.

After you have entered the game id a page is displayed with links to the various modules you use for your input. Each of those links are explained in this tutorial. Within those links you save what you have entered with the 'Save' button, you clear the input mask with the 'Reset' button, and you return to the previous page without saving what you have entered with the 'Cancel/Back' link.

Inning:

In this page you enter game result per inning, and the final outcome of the game is tallied automatically. Enter the result for each inning that was played (normally 9 or 7). Enter a '0' for each inning that was played and the team didn't score, but enter nothing for innings that wasn't played, e.g.due to the Mercy Rule.

Note that in the current version you have to enter a 0 in the bottom half of the final inning, even if that half wasn't played due to the home team being in the lead after the top half of the frame.

Batting:

In this page you enter the offensive stats, i. e. batting and base running. The page consists of a table with rows and columns. Each row represents a player, and each column the stat items more or less as they appear on the Score Sheet.
Heading
Description
Player
Drop down list with all players registred for the two teams playing this specific game. If a player is missing from the list, he or she can be added using the 'Manage Players' module. If you for some reason is unable to enter the necessary player in that module, you can choose another player from the same team that didn't play in this game, and report to your league administrator what name was used in place of which player. The adminstrator can then update your entry.
Pos
Position in the line-up, entered with a specific syntax. Starters are entered with their number in the line-up multiplied with 10, i.e. lead-off is 10, second batter 20, third 30, clean-up 40, etc. If a player is replaced with a substitute, the substitute will use the number of the player he replaced plus 1. That means if the lead-off is replaced, his or her replacement will have pos 11, if the third player in the line-up is replaced, that replacement will have number 31. If a further replacement takes place in the same position in the line-up, the existing number is incremented with 1. If our replacement in the third position is replaced with yet another player that player then get pos 32, and so on. Example: 72 is the third player batting in the seventh position.
Pa
Plate appearences, i.e the number of times this player has come to bat
Ab
At bats, i.e. number plate appearences minus SH, SF, BB, IBB, HP, IO.
R
Runs, number of runs scored by this player.
H
Hits, total number of safe hits made by this player, including doubles, triples and home runs
2B
Doubles
3B
Triples
Hr
Homeruns
Gidp
Grounded into double play, i.e. the number times he grounded into a double or triple play (includes both succesfully executed plays and those interupted by errors).
Sh
Sacrifice hits, i.e. bunts made to advance runners
Sf
Sacrifice flies.
Bb
Base on balls (unintentional)
Ibb
Intentional base on balls,
Hp
Hit by pitch.
Io
Interference/Obstruction,
Sb
Stolen bases.
Cs
Caught stealing.
K
Strikeouts.
Rbi
Runs batted in-

When you attempt to save what you have entered, certain checks are performed to find errors, e. g. the program checks that AB is not greater than PA, and that PA equals AB + SH + SF + BB + IBB + HP + IO.

Fielding:

Here the fielding stats are entered. This page is very similar to the Batting page, but obviously with other columns.

Seq
Sequence number, used to specify in what order a player has played the various positions in in this game. If the player has played in only one position, then enter '1' in this field, otherwise '1' for the first position, '2' for the second, etc. Note that this sequence is per player, so what other players have done has no effect. E.g.. Our player starts on second base, is moved to short after 5 innings, and pitches the last two innings. The stats as second baseman get seq '1', shortstop gets '2', and pitcher gets '3'.
I
Innings played (at this position). Fractions of an inning is entered with decimal notation, i, e. two and two thirds innings (2 2/3) is entered 2.67, five and one third of an inning is entered 5.33.
Pos
Position, using the normal notation for defensive positions (1 = Pitcher, 2 = Catcher, 3 = First base, 4 = Second Base, etc). However, we should also note positions that are not defensive (this is so the box-score appears correct). The following 'non-defensive' positions should be entered:
95: Tiebreak runner (softboll)
96: Designated player (softboll)
97: Pinch runner
98: Pinch hitter
99: Designated hitter (baseboll)
Please note that for these 'non-defensive' positions the columns 'I', 'PO', 'A', 'EC', 'ET', 'EG' and 'DP' should always be '0'.
Po
No. of Putouts credited to this player
A
No. of Assists credited to this player
Et
No. of Throwing Errors the player has committed
Ec
No. of Catching Errors (dropped Fly Balls, dropped throws, etc) the player has committed
Eg
No. of Groundball Errors the player has committed
Dp
No. of Double Plays or Triple Plays the player has been involved in.

Pitching:

Here the pitching stats are entered. This page is very similar to the Batting page, but obviously with other columns.

Play-by-play:

The system offers the possibility to enter each play live on internet as they appear. The documentation for this module is yet to be written.

Recap:

The system also offers the possibility to write a recap about the game, which will be directly published on the public web site. When a player is mentioned in the recap, a link will automatically be created to that player's 'Player Card' (provided that the player name in the recap is spelled exeactly the same way as it is in the team roster).

You can also add pictures to your recap, either pictures you upload, or you can choose from the player portraits stored on the server.

Video clips can also be upploaded and presented with the recap. Format for those video clips are Flash vidoes to be shown on the recap, and additionally AVI or MPEG files for download.

Verify game:

This module checks all data that you have entered, to make sure that everything is as correct as can be checked. Checks includes making sure that one team's pitching stats corresponds to the opponent's batting stats, and that each defensive position has the correct number of innings.

It is strongly recommended that all games entered are put through this check before it is seen as completed

Show boxscore:

Displays what you have entered in box-score format, This provides a quick overview of the stats you have entered.
